Taipei Basin from Yangming Villa live camera
From a terrace halfway up the mountain, the whole Taipei Basin at once. After dark the city's lights spread across the floor of the basin.
What you are looking at
In the sample frame, dark green treetops fill the foreground and the Taipei basin lies hazily beyond them. A single rounded hill stands to the left, and tower blocks run in a band along the floor of the basin. There is a good deal of cloud, and towards the far right the basin brightens into what looks like water.
The camera sits at Yangmingshuwu, inside Yangmingshan National Park on Zhongxing Road in Beitou District, Taipei. It was originally called the Zhongxing Guesthouse. It is the only official residence in Taiwan whose site Chiang Kai-shek chose himself, built over the 58th and 59th years of the Republic — 1969 and 1970 — and used both for receiving guests and as a summer retreat.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and keeps no summer time. Seven in the evening in Japan is six in the evening in Taiwan, so the hour when the lights come on across the basin falls at a convenient time to open from Japan as well.
After Chiang Kai-shek's death the Kuomintang's Party History Committee moved in here and the place was renamed Yangmingshuwu. The buildings and their management passed to Yangmingshan National Park in 1997, and it was opened to the public the following year, in 1998. The interior can now be seen on a paid guided tour; the full-price ticket is 80 yuan.
The angle looks down over the basin, so the weather shows directly in what you get. On clear air the view reaches the edge of the hills on the far side, but once haze settles the city sinks into white and only its outline is left. The trees in front take up the lower half of the frame, so the basin is only visible in the upper half.
