A wide lawn at the foot of the road up to Alishan. Ranges stack up behind it, and in the evening the ridgelines stand out against the light.

In the sample frame a lawn fills the picture, with a white gate-like structure topped by gilded spires standing at the centre. Red three-dimensional lettering sits to the left and a large red box tied with a ribbon to the right, while folded parasols and benches are lined up in the foreground. Low ranges of hills layer up behind, and the sky is blue.
This is a lawn at Chukou in Fanlu Township, Chiayi County, on the Alishan Highway, Provincial Highway 18, at around the 32 to 33 km mark. Installations shaped around the theme of love have been put up here, so it is also known as the Wanglaishan Love Grassland. The lawn is open free of charge.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan, so morning in Japan is morning at Chukou. To catch the hour when the ridges stand out against the evening backlight, opening it at about six in the evening by a Japanese clock puts you at about five in Taiwan.
The land here was originally the Niupu farm of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, and the park administration acquired it by negotiated purchase in the 91st year of the Republic, 2002. The main building was completed in February of the 102nd year, 2013. Just to the north, at the 32 km mark of Highway 18, is the Chukou Visitor Center, at 51 Checheng, Chukou Village, Fanlu Township, Chiayi County.
The Bazhang River runs past Chukou, crossed by two suspension bridges with more than eighty years of history behind them, the Tianchang and the Dijiu. Lawn and installations are what the frame is mostly made of, so the weather shows directly in what you get. In clear weather the ranges at the back can be counted off one by one; on a wet day the colour of the grass sinks and nobody is left under the parasols.
