Kizu River live camera — southern Kyoto

From the Iga highlands through the south of Kyoto Prefecture. Broad sandy bars, and the channel shifts with the volume of water.

What you are looking at

In the Iga basin it takes in the Hattori and the Tsuge, runs west through the narrow Iwakura gorge, and comes out into the Yamashiro basin. From there it turns north, turns again at Kizu, and joins the Yodo at Oyamazaki. This feed shows points along that stretch in turn.

The thing to watch is the breadth of the bed. The bed of sand and gravel is wide, so on a low-water day the current divides into several threads, and as the water rises they join into one. The position of the channel itself moves with the volume: that is how this river reads on camera.

The basin covers 1,596 square kilometres and the main channel is 99 kilometres long. Within the Yodo system it carries the second-largest catchment after Lake Biwa. Because the Iwakura gorge is narrow, rain that fell upstream is held up here, and the level rises readily on the Ueno basin side.

Look at the gradient of the bed and the upper reaches run at one in 460 to one in 860, while around the Iwakura gorge it steepens to one in 170 to one in 240. That drop is what sends sand and gravel downstream and builds the wide bed. Downstream at Kozuya in Yawata stands the Kozuya bridge, built so that the deck floats away when the level rises. It was put up in March 1953; the bridge is 356.5 metres long, and its 39 piers are divided into 13 sections of about 27 metres each.

The water builds at the end of the rainy season and in the typhoon months. Because the flow is held back at the Iwakura gorge, the level rises at different hours above it and below it. On a hard rainy day the dark and the drops leave little to read. Check with the local authority before deciding to evacuate. The place on screen is not fixed; it changes in turn.
