Maruyama and Izushi Rivers live camera — Toyooka, Hyogo

Rivers of the wetlands where the oriental stork returned. The gradient is gentle and seawater reaches a long way up from the mouth.

What you are looking at

This river runs along the northern side of Hyogo Prefecture and out into the Sea of Japan. Its source is Maruyama in Ikuno, Asago, and it passes through the Toyooka basin taking in the Inaba, the Izushi, the Nasa and others. Ninety-five tributaries join it. This feed shows points along that stretch in turn.

The thing to watch is the stillness on a day when the surface barely seems to move. The gradient is gentle, so on a clear day the picture is as settled as a pond. For the same reason, when the water does rise the level comes up across a wide part of the basin all at once.

The basin covers about 1,300 square kilometres and the channel is 68 kilometres long. Work to return the oriental stork to the wild is under way in this basin, and Toyooka has the Hyogo Park of the Oriental Stork. The gentle gradient and the wet lowland that make this river awkward to manage for flood control are good conditions for a bird to live in.

Typhoon Tokage, in October 2004, rewrote this river's records. The level passed the design high-water mark at Tateno on the main stem and at Hirohara on the Izushi, a tributary, reaching the highest readings since observations began. The embankment failed in two places: the right bank of the Maruyama at kilometre 13.2, at Tateno in Toyooka, and the left bank of the Izushi at kilometre 5.3, at Torii in Toyooka. The area inundated came to 4,083 hectares and 7,944 houses were flooded.

It moves most at the close of the rainy season and through the typhoon months of August and September. The gentle gradient means it rises slowly, and by the same token takes its time to fall away. On a heavy day the picture is dark and drops on the lens blur it. Use what the local authority issues as the basis for an evacuation decision. The point is not fixed; it changes in turn.
